 Robert Eyles‘Mother and Child’

Cautiously, with enormous trepidation, I tapped away at the virgin stone, gradually building confidence and getting a real buzz from the way the material yielded to the demands of the increasingly confident chisel. Suddenly, I felt a rush of intuitive, creative inspiration and my hands became strangely energised. I was taken over by something and the chisel began to fly as I felt life inside the stone.

Artist’s Statement 2006

My new conceptual sculpture explores the fragile relationships between ourselves and our natural environment and hopefully serves as a reminder of our individual vulnerability, together with an expression of hope and love.
It’s ultimately a loss and redemption story which affects us all – that’s the fascination.
My work often combines stone, plastics and light as a representation of these emotions and I am excited as to where this may lead me.
