Much of Robert’s early work has been figurative, but, following the Asian Tsunami disaster, he was stimulated to explore conceptual themes addressing the vulnerable relationship between man and nature in today’s troubled environment. New thinking has led to the use of new, man-made materials, particularly Perspex which, with its clear, hard precision, contrasts dynamically with the mysterious, agelessness of stone to produce an unusual composite. Robert is fascinated by the light transmitting, reflective properties of Perspex which brings light and extended form to the finite mass of the stone.
His work is informed by Bauhaus visionary Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Group ZERO light artist Otto Piene, Giuseppe Penone of the Arte Povera movement and optical phenomena artist, Olafur Eliasson. A new body of sculptural light artwork is in progress and will be added to the Gallery soon. |
