Following a career in international advertising, Robert Eyles changed direction in 1996 and set up a bespoke furniture design and production business in Southampton. From working with wood and exotic veneers, he soon found a love of form and materials, which fuelled his growing interest in three-dimensional art. This led to him establishing a contemporary art gallery in Salisbury and developing his own practice as an artist. He is currently completing a degree in Visual Art at Winchester School of Art and works from his studio at Somerley, near Ringwood, Hampshire.
Sculpture is an art form where experience of life seems to be particularly useful and frequently the need to express oneself in sculptural form comes later in life. Robert Eyles is no exception as, although having worked in creative fields for many years, he didn’t create his first stone sculpture until 1995, shortly after meeting well known sculptor, Laurence Broderick, on the Isle of Skye.
Robert carves most of his work directly in stone and believes that each stone has something unique inside it and that being true to the material helps release the essence. He passionately believes that this hidden life can be discovered by the sculptor if his mind and hands are truly working in harmony with the material.
